Liche Oseguera Workshop 4.25.08

Chuchumbé was founded in 1991 by group members Félix “Liche” José Oseguera Rueda and Patricio Hidalgo Belli. Naming themselves after an Afro-Mexican dance that was suppressed by the Spanish some 300 years ago, the group has since released two albums of their music that is based in the Afro-Hispanic-Aboriginal tradition of son jarocho that is, however, open to the most contemporary music trends. To their earlier CD release ¡Caramba Niño!, Chuchumbé has added Contrapuntea’o. These are inspired by the tradition of fandangos – which in Vera Cruz is a nighttime party incorporating dancing, music, and verse-making.

4.29.07    Hello Amigos,

The weather is getting nicer out and people are coming out to enjoy the fun in the sun and more so live music. This month's turnout for April's Fandango at Gallery Colibri was a good one. We'd like to tip our hats for the new group "Araguaney" that performed there that evening to start the nights exciting gathering.  The members are Jose Luis, David, Raul & Javier. This newly formed group has the same love for the culture and music of Latin America that we do. Their mix of music with instruments such as the marimba, jaranas, guitars and a nice assortment of percussion instruments made for a good performance. I especially like the sounds from the mandolin. We hope to see more from Araguaney and if you're interested in seeing one of their upcoming performances drop them an email.  (Click on image to email)

I was interested to find out that Araguaney is a tree and is the national tree of Venezuela

Viva Araguaney!!

Hotter House with Sones de Mexico 4.13.07

It was Hotter this month at the Hot House with Sones De Mexico. They performed a great arrangement of music with energy that left the audience wanting more. What a talented group. We enjoyed Sones many different styles and rhythms of Mexican music and look forward to seeing more from the group. "What a nice job", I said to Victor Pichardo of Sones, his reply was "This is our lively hood, this is what we do"  with his charismatic smile." Victor Pichardo also teaches Mariachi & Fandango workshops at the Old Town School of Folk Music .

Don't miss the opportunity to see one of their performances or listen to their cd's. Soak in this ensemble's versatile and upbeat music. You'll be in for a treat. Visit www.sonesdemexico.com for more info on this great group.
